Edinburgh Grassmarket
Heritage Scaffolding Project: The Beehive Inn
In January 2026, AMF Access Services commenced a specialist access project in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic Grassmarket area for our client, PDS Group.
Project Overview
Precision Scaffolding Solutions for Heritage Area
As a specialist commercial fit-out contractor, PDS required a reliable partner to facilitate remedial stone, window, and roof works on this prominent heritage building.
The scaffold was successfully erected over a five-day period, with our team dedicating three days to the complex front elevation and two days to the rear, ensuring a solid foundation for the subsequent trade works.
Logistical Planning in a Historic Zone
Working in central Edinburgh requires precision planning, particularly in areas like the Grassmarket which are heavily populated by tourists and subject to strict traffic restrictions.
Material Constraints
Due to tight locations and road closures, materials could not be left at street level for any significant duration.
Strategic Delivery
To mitigate disruption, our team began operations at 7:00 AM daily, with all materials delivered prior to this start time.
Public Safety
We secured the immediate area around the task to prevent unwanted access, ensuring the safety of pedestrians and tourists in close proximity to the site.
“In central Edinburgh, planning is everything. Moving materials efficiently and keeping them away from street level is key to a smooth operation.”
Safety First: Assessments & Toolbox Talks
The AMF Difference
As with all AMF projects, safety was the primary driver of our operations. Before commencing, a full Risk Assessment and Method Statement were completed to identify site-specific hazards.
To ensure these protocols were actively followed, the team conducted a Toolbox Talk (TBT) every morning. These sessions ensured that every operative was fully briefed on their specific tasks for the day and the dangers present, aligning with our commitment to strict Health & Safety standards.
Technical Specifications & Access Solutions
Collaborative Excellence
The scaffold was designed to provide full access for multiple trades while maintaining structural integrity and public safety. The build included:
Full Boarding
Completely boarded lifts throughout for maximum workspace.
Safety Features
Ladder hatches at each working lift and triple handrails on the top working lift.
Protection
Padding applied to uprights for pedestrian safety and debris netting installed on the front elevation.
Stability
Ledgers applied at 50cm intervals at ladder access points, with rigorous pull tests conducted on all ties.
Project Delivery
Reliable, Safe, Quality
The project was delivered and handed over to PDS Group within the strict time constraints provided. Thanks to the detailed planning and the expertise of our Edinburgh-based team, the work was completed without incident or injury, reinforcing our reputation for reliable, safe Commercial Scaffolding.
